Smoky Mountains fall foliage 2025: when to visit and where to look
The Smokies have over 100 species of native hardwoods, which is why the color show lasts so long. Peak isn't a single weekend, it's a wave that moves down the mountain over three weeks.
2025 foliage timeline
- Early October: Peak above 5,000 feet (Clingmans Dome, Mount LeConte)
- Mid-October: Color drops to 3,000-5,000 feet
- Late October: Peak at mid-elevations near Gatlinburg
- Early November: Lower elevations finish out
Best overall window: October 10-31.
8 spots worth the drive
1. Clingmans Dome
Highest point in the park with 360-degree views of the ridgelines.
2. Newfound Gap Overlook
The classic shot at the Tennessee/North Carolina line.
3. Cades Cove Loop
Maples and hickories around the old homesteads. Best at golden hour.
4. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Old-growth forest with short hikes branching off the road.
5. Foothills Parkway
Ridge-top views without the park traffic.
6. Blue Ridge Parkway
Long stretches of overlooks, one after another.
7. Little River Road
River shots framed by hardwoods on both sides.
8. The deck at Whispering Pines
The cabin sits high enough that you can take in the canopy with coffee in hand. Not a bad backup if the parkways are jammed.
Two scenic drives
The classic loop (3-4 hours)
Whispering Pines to Newfound Gap Road to Clingmans Dome, return via Cades Cove.
The photo route (full day)
Roaring Fork Motor Trail to Newfound Gap to Blue Ridge Parkway.
Shooting fall color
- Golden hour gives the warmest light
- Overcast days actually make the colors read more saturated
- Misty mornings are the most distinctive look. Get out before 8 AM.
