Pigeon Forge, Tennessee: How the Town Actually Works

What is Pigeon Forge?

Pigeon Forge is a small city in Sevier County, East Tennessee, with about 6,000 year-round residents and millions of visitors. The name is literal: an iron forge built on the Little Pigeon River in 1817, on a stretch of water once famous for passenger pigeons. The Old Mill, grinding grain beside the river since 1830, still anchors the town's historic district.

Today the town is one of the busiest vacation strips in the Southeast. Dollywood sits on its eastern hill, dinner theaters and mountain coasters line the Parkway, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most-visited national park in the country — starts about 5 miles south. Most families base themselves in a cabin outside the strip and drive in for the noise.

How the Parkway works

Almost everything in Pigeon Forge sits on or just off the Parkway (US-441), a six-mile strip running north to south. Locals and hotels give directions by the numbered traffic lights along it — "The Island is near light #8" means more here than a street address ever will. Sevierville is the next town north, Gatlinburg and the park entrance are 10–15 minutes south.

Two practical notes. First, traffic: on summer Saturdays and October weekends the Parkway crawls, and the Wears Valley Road back way (US-321) is the local detour worth knowing. Second, you will drive everywhere — the strip is too long to walk, though the Fun Time Trolley loops the main stretch for pocket change if you would rather park once.

What is actually on it?
